Home Inspector Licensing and Continuing Education Classes



South Dakota Home Inspector Continuing Education Information

South Dakota home inspectors are licensed by the South Dakota Real Estate Commission. The statutes are from Chapter 36-21C and make up the laws for licensing of home inspectors which took effect January 1, 2001. There is a requirement for both pre-licensing education and continuing education. To become a registered or licensed home inspector in South Dakota:

To become a registered home inspector in South Dakota an applicant must:

  1. Be of good moral character

  2. Have successfully completed high school or high school equivalency

  3. Have successfully completed an approved home inspector course of not less than 40 hours

  4. Have successfully completed an examination administered by AMP (Applied Measurement Professionals, Inc.).  Exam information may be found at www.goamp.com or by calling 1-888-519-9901.

  5. Submit an application and application fee to the South Dakota Real Estate Commission

  6. Receive approval of the application from the South Dakota Real Estate Commission

To become a licensed home inspector in South Dakota an applicant must meet the following requirements:

  1. Be of good moral character

  2. Have successfully completed high school or high school equivalency

  3. Have successfully completed an approved home inspector course of not less than 40 hours

  4. Been employed as a registered home inspector for no less than one year and performed at least 100 home inspections for compensation

  5. Have successfully completed an examination administered by AMP (Applied Measurement Professionals, Inc.).  Exam information may be found at www.goamp.com or by calling 1-888-519-9901.

  6. Submit an application, experience log and application fee to the South Dakota Real Estate Commission

  7. Receive approval of the application from the South Dakota Real Estate Commission.

ONCE LICENSED, THERE IS NO DISTINCTION BETWEEN THE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF A LICENSED HOME INSPECTOR AND THOSE OF A REGISTERED HOME INSPECTOR.

To renew a home inspection license in South Dakota:

  • A home inspector license/registration must be renewed every 2 years.

  • Renewal notices are mailed to home inspectors whose licenses will soon be expiring.

  • The renewal application and fee of $100.00 must be received by the S.D. Real Estate Commission by 5:00 p.m. on November 30th of the year the license/registration expires.

  • To remain on active status, the licensed/registered home inspector must complete 24 hours of approved continuing education by December 31st of the year the license/registration expires. If the education is not completed by the expiration of the license/registration, the home inspector must return the license/registration to the SD Real Estate Commission and be place on inactive status until the educational requirements are met.

i-Course is not approved by South Dakota for continuing education, however, you may use i-Course home inspection classes for credits beyond the state required 24 every two years to maintain your professional membership requirements.
