Massachusetts Board of Registration of Home Inspectors Information
The Commonwealth of Massachusetts has licensed home inspectors under the Rules and Regulations of 266 CMR. In order to be licensed as a home inspector applicants must meet the requirements for licensure set forth by M.G.L c. 112, 222:
- Be of good moral character
- Have completed high school or its equivalent
- Been engaged as a licensed associate home inspector for not less than one year and performed not less than 100 inspections under the supervision of a licensed home inspector
- Passed an associate home inspector written or electronic competence exam as offered and approved by the board
- Paid the appropriate state fee
- Maintain E&O insurance
In order to be licensed as an associate home inspector applicants must meet these requirements:
- Be of good moral character
- Have completed high school or its equivalent
- Have successfully completed a board-approved training program
- Have performed not less than 25 home inspections in the presence of a licensed home inspector
- Have passed a written or electronic competency examination offered or approved by the board
- Have an identified supervisor who is a person licensed in good standing in the commonwealth as a home inspector
- Paid the appropriate state fee
- Maintain E&O insurance
The Commonwealth of Massachusetts requires that home inspectors, as a condition of license renewal, complete a minimum of 24 contact hours of continuing education activities per continuing education period. A continuing education period consists of the 24 months prior to each renewal date. The continuing education needs to be approved by the Board.
